II. Interpret the following sayings.

The phrase/proverb “darkest hour is just before the dawn” means that there is always a ray of hope even in the worst situations, or circumstances.

Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration is a quote that says that you achieve things primarily through hard work rather than creative ideas. This famous quote is attributed to American inventor Thomas Edison.

Instead of giving a man a fish, teach him to catch it.

It is better to teach people how to do something themselves than to just do it for them. This expression is just part of the full proverb, If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day; If you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.

Half a loaf is better than no bread.

Half a loaf is better than none. Something is better than nothing, even if it is less than one wanted.Half a loaf is better than none is primarily the American version of the proverb; half a loaf is better than no bread is primarily the British version of the proverb.

To understand or realize how a situation is developing and use this in deciding what to do.

This means that if you marry someone without knowing him or her very well, you will later feel sorry that you got married.

Used for saying that someone is wasting time dealing with things that are not important, and is ignoring a much more serious problem.
